Bensalem movie theater now serving alcohol

Patrons of American Multi-Cinema movie theater in the Woodhaven Mall can now have beer, wine or cocktails with their popcorn.

Earlier this month, the 10-screen multiplex in Bensalem opened a new MacGuffins bar, where drinks can be purchased at a concession stand separate from food and snacks and can be brought into theaters.

This makes Woodhaven the fourth AMC location in Pennsylvania to implement alcohol sales, but the addition is becoming more popular across the nation, AMC officials said.

Alcohol sales will be monitored closely, and, according to AMC, patrons of all ages will be asked to show identification at purchase, and may be asked anytime throughout their visit. Alcohol is also served in clear containers, different from the cups soft drinks are served in as another measure of prevention.

AMC also proposed bringing a MacGuffins bar to the Neshaminy Mall location in Bensalem Township, but during an Oct. 19 meeting, council unanimously rejected AMC’s proposal to transfer a liquor license from another Bucks County municipality to Bensalem.

The liquor license for Woodhaven was transferred from within the township, so AMC didn’t need council’s approval for that location.

“We weren’t happy with the plan and voted it down 5-0,” Bensalem Councilman Bryan Allen said.

There is still a possibility of AMC appealing Bensalem’s decision to Bucks County Court, but as of late last week, Bensalem officials have not seen an appeal.

Despite concerns from a few locals nearby, AMC officials say this addition should not result in the excessive consumption of alcohol.
