Despite initial concerns about traffic congestion, Bensalem Township Council unanimously approved the development of a TJ Maxx department store in the Woodhaven Plaza during its April 13 meeting.

Developers at Paramount Realty Services Inc. worked with Bensalem Traffic Engineer Phil Wursta to analyze the area and ultimately decide that the additional 25,000-square-foot space would be appropriate for the shopping center on Route 13.

According to Maurice Zekaria of Paramount Reality, construction will begin as early as July. The building will take five to six months, and the TJ Maxx will be set to open in February, after the holiday shopping season.

Zekaria also gave an update on the status of the other major businesses in the shopping center.

He said Paramount is “close” to signing a 15-year lease extension with Home Depot. Babies “R” Us is expected to sign a seven-year extension within the next few days. Acme recently exercised a five-year option, which will begin nine months from now.

Paramount also contributed $1.5 million to the AMC movie theater in return for a 15-year lease extension. Zekaria said, in total, AMC will spend about $3 million on renovations to its building, including new seats, carpet, flooring and other upgrades.

“They’ve all committed to the long-term and we’re very excited for TJ Maxx,” Zekaria said.

Paramount Reality has owned Woodhaven Plaza for the last nine years.

  1. I am very disappointed that tj maxx has cordoned off my access to acme. I live on a street with senior citizens including myself. Most of us do not drive and use the path from our homes to the acme. In cordoning this off we must walk down 13 around the bank and in the front of acme or take a left behind the acme and walk around passing babies r us to get to acme. Why must you block this off?
